Arthurian Myth
Tomb Raider Legend is based around the Arthurian Myth, a popular legend in Britain. It talks of a King which is said to have lived between the 6th and 12th Century who grew up unaware of his royal heritage until he pulls out the sword, the sword in the stone. Whoever pulled out the sword would tell who would be worthy enough to rule over Camelot. After Arthur was crowned king, Merlin a wizard stood beside him. While Arthur Pendragon was fighting Pellinore the sword from the stone broke, and so he travelled to a lake where the lady of the lake (also known as Nimeuh) gave him Excaliber which was said to hold great power.
Arthur was said to have died in a battle with Mordred, in some text Mordred was Arthur's son. Merlin was trapped in a cave after Nimeuh trapped him there with her magic. Arthur was then taken to Avalon, a paradise and it is said that he will return again to rule.
